Google News has recently issued a new service called the system of online badging. This system lets google news n users earn badges as they read their favorite articles. This know as gamification which is the addition of game mechanics to non game activities. There are more than 500 badges designed by Google  to classify avid news readers. These badges are private by default but you can make them public if you want / Google engineer Natasha Mohanty has put it clear here;

Your badges are private by default, but if you want, you can share your badges with your friendst .Tell them about your news interests, display your expertise, start a conversation, or just plain brag about how well-read you are.
